Iberia has hammered out an agreement in principle on a new ground staff deal for the period to 2017, joining tentative accords it has already struck with pilots and cabin crew.
Leaders from the CCOO and UGT unions—representing Iberia’s maintenance and airport handling staff—and Iberia’s senior
management have agreed on key points of a new collective bargaining agreement, although it still needs to be put to a union vote.
“As with the other employee groups, the 7% pay cut decreed in the mediation agreement last spring will remain in place for ground employees, as well as the wage freeze through 2015. After that date, increases will be subject to the airline’s profitability,” Iberia said in a statement. Other changes include new rules on seniority and promotion, as well as the introduction of maintenance multi-tasking.
Iberia said it is laying the foundation for “fundamental productivity and flexibility improvements” and committed to lifting a further 4% pay cut when productivity measures take effect.
Over the last few weeks, Iberia has reached agreements in principle with pilots and cabin crew as part of a radical restructuring, which has seen the loss of 2,507 jobs or 12% of its total workforce since December 2012. These comprise 1,857 ground staff, 458 cabin crew and 192 pilots.
Earlier this month, Iberia CEO Luis Gallego confirmed plans for a further 258 pilot and 627 cabin crew redundancies, currently under mediation, but said he was seeking additional headcount cuts in both areas.
The provisional ground staff agreement, along with similar cabin crew and pilot deals, are still subject to union approval.
