SAS revamps long-haul cabins with new seats and Wi-Fi

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has unveiled a major overhaul of the cabins products on its long-haul flights, including the installation of Wi-Fi on all aircraft.
Seven of the carrier’s Airbus A330 and A340s will receive cabin upgrades, with new seats in all classes, on-demand in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems and Wi-Fi access.
The first upgraded aircraft is expected to go into service in early 2015, with the majority of the SAS long-haul fleet featuring the new interiors within 12 months. The airline’s eight new Airbus A350 aircraft, which will be delivered from 2018 onwards, will also have the new cabins.
“SAS customers will enjoy a totally new travel experience in our upgraded cabins. The new interior is designed to meet the needs of frequent flyers and substantially enhances our customer offer,” said Rickard Gustafson, president & CEO of SAS.
In economy class, the new seats will have a pitch of 31 or 32 inches (79-81cm) and come equipped with nine-inch HD IFE screens, power outlets and USB ports. The premium economy cabin will offer the same amenities but with a 37-38-inch pitch and 12-inch IFE screen, while the business class cabin will offer full flat-bed seats that stretch out to 196cm, plus 15-inch IFE screens. All business class seats will offer direct aisle access.
SAS currently flies long-haul to New York, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and, from August 2014, Houston.

New Bombardier jets to offer Wi-Fi

Bombardier has announced that its brand new CSeries aircraft will come factory-fitted with in-flight Wi-Fi capabilities.
The Canadian planemaker has teamed up with Panasonic Avionics to install a satellite-based Ku-band antenna on the CSeries regional jets, to provide passengers with in-flight internet, email and mobile phone connectivity.
“We’re excited to publicly share this news about the line-fit option for in-flight connectivity as it demonstrates once again how we are equipping the CSeries aircraft with leading-edge technologies,” said Robert Dewar, vice president of the CSeries programme for Bombardier.
“In addition to offering connectivity solutions such as [Panasonic's] eXConnect, the CSeries family of aircraft has also been designed to support embedded audio and video on-demand systems to deliver high-quality entertainment solutions directly to passengers via seat-back monitors and also via wireless broadcast.”
Designed to seat 100-149 passengers, the new CSeries is Bombardier’s challenger in the competitive single-aisle market. It is being marketed as a light-weight, fuel-efficient aircraft to compete with Boeing’s new B737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo.
Bombardier has so far taken orders for 447 CSeries aircraft from carriers including Korean Air, Gulf Air and SWISS. The smaller CS100 version is due to launch in the second half of 2015, with the larger CS300 following six months later.

Faster Wi-Fi On Flights Leads To Battle In The Sky

The number of commercial planes worldwide with Wi-Fi, cell service or both is expected to more than triple over the next 10 years, to 14,000 from about 4,000 currently. Wi-Fi in the sky is taking off, promising much better connections for travelers and a bonanza for the companies that sell the systems.

With satellite-based Wi-Fi, internet speeds on jetliners are getting lightning fast. And airlines are finding that travellers expect connections in the air to rival those on the ground – and at lower cost. But the fast evolution of rival systems and standards, such as Ku band and Ka band, pose a big question for airlines: which one to choose?

Equipping fleets can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and airlines don’t want to see their investment quickly become outdated due to newer technology. That’s made some cautious about signing up.

“We don’t want to end up with a Betamax,” said Peter Ingram, chief financial officer of Hawaiian Airlines, referring to the Sony video format that eventually lost out to the VHS standard, leaving many consumers with obsolete systems.

Hawaiian is still considering which system to use. The drive for in-flight connectivity also has intensified after the disappearance on March 8 of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 with 239 people aboard. Search teams are scouring parts of the Indian Ocean for the missing aircraft, and it might have been better tracked if a satellite system capable of streaming cockpit data had been on board.

GLOBAL MARKET

The U.S. market for airborne internet got a big boost last November after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration allowed passengers to use smartphones, tablets and e-readers throughout a flight, ending a long-standing ban on their use during takeoff and landing.

While the change hasn’t been adopted worldwide, the FAA’s move is expected to lead to greater use of devices, and bandwidth, on planes. About 40 per cent of U.S. jetliners already have some Wi-Fi, but the race is on to wire the rest of a growing global fleet, and to make the existing connections better.

Even with a tripling, only half of the worldwide fleet will be wired in 2022, suggesting demand for new systems will last longer. Much of the U.S. fleet will need upgrades to access satellites, since many planes currently are equipped for ground-based transmission, which is typically slower than satellite.

“Passengers of the future want to be connected when they want,” Chris Emerson, senior vice president of marketing at Airbus, told Reuters during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

“Everyone wants internet the way they have it on the ground, so it has to be cheap or free.”

GREATER SPEED

Satellite technology will speed up onboard connections sevenfold, to about 70 megabits per second next year, fast enough to download a two-hour high-definition movie in about four minutes. Of course, that bandwidth will be shared among all of the users on the flight, which could number 200 or more.

Satellites also will allow service to reach developing markets in Asia and Latin America, and to offer expanded service in the U.S. and European markets. Investors expect the global expansion and faster speeds will fuel greater use of services, with revenue split between the providers and the airlines.

It also will drive hardware sales, as airlines outfit aircraft with antennas, radios and routers. Honeywell, for example, makes fuselage-top antennas that link to the Global Xpress network provided by Inmarsat PLC, which operates on the Ka band.

In demonstrating the GX system at the Hamburg show, Honeywell said the system can deliver up to 50 megabits per second consistently around most of the globe, and it plans to test it on its own plane this summer, while Air China is expected to start trials with it in late 2014 or early 2015.

“GX is going to be a real game changer for airlines and their passengers from 2015 when the service comes online,” John Broughton, director of product marketing for GX at Honeywell, said in an interview.

A rival standard, Ku band, operates in a lower frequency band. While it may be able to achieve higher bandwidth than Ka band in certain areas, its overall connectivity is not as consistent, especially on long-haul flights over oceans, experts said.

Gogo used the Hamburg show to announce its 2Ku system, that will use a special dual antenna made by ThinKom Solutions Inc to raise the capacity of the Ku band system to 70 mbps, a leap from its current systems that operated at 3 to 10 mbps. Gogo also offers Ka band satellite connectivity and built its business on ground-based cell-tower technology in the United States.

“BETAMAX” RISK

The improving systems mean customers will demand better connections. Some frequent fliers with status on several airlines say they choose flights based on Wi-Fi availability.

“It becomes an ante at the table,” said Jonathan Schildkraut, an analyst at Evercore Partners, which co-managed Gogo’s IPO last June.

But the variety of systems poses tough decisions for airlines, which risk choosing a technology that could become outdated.

Ingram, the CFO of Hawaiian Airlines, said the choice and cost of a system is especially important for his fleet since it mostly carries people on vacation – people who don’t want to be tethered to the office.

“The technology in the Wi-Fi space for trans-Pacific flying is still evolving,” he said, “so we haven’t made any final decisions yet.”

German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG knows the perils. It originally worked with Connexion, a Boeing unit developing in-flight Wi-Fi that operated a decade ago but failed to attract enough customers.

“We were a little bit unfortunate,” CEO Christoph Franz said in an interview. “We had spent millions to equip our aircraft.”

Lufthansa has since outfitted more than 90 per cent of its long-haul planes with satellite connectivity.

But it is taking a step-by-step approach for other planes, outfitting about 30 Airbus A321 aircraft with a system that can stream content from an onboard server to handheld devices, but doesn’t connect to the internet.

“We need a decent provider for that, but we didn’t want our customers to wait,” Franz said. He expects a “triple-digit-million” euro investment to outfit the full fleet.

“We are ready to do this,” he said. “But we have to look at the bill. We will see which system at the end of the day turns out to be the most affordable and the fastest.”

Vueling will be the first European company to offer connectivity at 20Mbps


Vueling and Telefónica have reached an agreement to implement a high-speed wifi service in aircrafts, so that users will have a very similar navigation experience to that enjoyed on the ground.
 
Thanks to this agreement, four of Vueling's Airbus A320s will have the service available during this year, making it the first European company to offer high-speed wifi, thereby laying the foundations for what the on-board connectivity model will be like. To date, this kind of data access was not possible on short distances in Europe such as Madrid-Barcelona, for example. This opens up a world of possibilities for passengers: consulting and answering email, updating their statuses on social networks or being connected to news and events in real time, among many other possibilities.

Telefónica will be responsible for integrating LiveTV's high-speed technology with Eutelsat's AIR ACCESS mobile service via its KA-SAT satellite in order to provide a complete internet access solution in the air.
 

Emirates opens new lounge at Leonardo da Vinci Airport

Emirates airline has opened a new lounge at Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome, Italy. Located in Terminal 3 in the airside transit area, a few metres after passport control, the new Emirates lounge offers seating for 156 customers. Services include a fully equipped business centre with wi-fi connection, TV and reading areas, shower facilities and a prayer room.

The lounge also offers guests a buffet service including gourmet dishes from Italy and around the world, as well as a complimentary full-bar service including premium wine, spirits and champagne. The 920m² lounge features a contemporary design furnished with Italian marble floors, Gold Rolex clocks, 156 leather armchairs and mahogany furniture.

“We work hard to consistently deliver the best travel experience to our customers, and the new lounge in Rome is a testament to our commitment. This is the largest dedicated lounge at the airport in Rome, and is in a new design that reflects the modern style of the Emirates lounges at Dubai’s Concourse A,” said Mohammed Mattar, Emirates’ divisional senior vice president of airport services.

The new lounge is available to Emirates First Class and Business Class customers, as well as Platinum and Gold members of Emirates Skywards, the airline’s frequent flyer programme. The lounge is part of a €2.53m (£2m) investment by Emirates to enhance the travel experience for its premium customers. Emirates customers to and from Rome grew by over 110% last year compared to figures from 2009.

Mattar added, “Our history in Italy started in Rome when we first established our presence in 1992, and it is the only city in Italy where we fly our iconic A380 aircraft. We have seen passenger numbers grow steadily in the last five years.

“The need for an Emirates lounge has never been greater. It underpins our ongoing investment in Italy, and from our chauffeur drive service to the tranquil luxury onboard, we provide our customers with a seamless Emirates experience they are accustomed to.”

According to calculations by the Airports Council International (ACI), Emirates’ operations have been responsible for the creation of more than 500 direct and supporting 2,000 indirect/induced jobs in and around Leonardo da Vinci Airport in 2013.

Japan Airlines Selects Panasonic Avionics Connectivity Service For Widebody Aircraft

Japan Airlines (JAL) has selected Panasonic Avionics (Panasonic) for a major expansion of in-flight Wi-Fi for its international fleet which includes Boeing 787s, Boeing 777-200ERs and Boeing 767-300ERs. The commitment comes after a successful introduction of Panasonic’s broadband Wi-Fi service on 13 of Japan Airlines’ 777s that have been flying international routes since July 2012. The carrier has become one of the first airlines to offer internet access, email services, and more on flights between Japan and Europe and across the Pacific to North America.
