The man arrested after a Qatar Airways plane was escorted to Manchester Airport by an RAF Typhoon because of a bomb hoax has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
The 47-year-old man was arrested on board flight QR23 from Doho, Qatar, by two armed officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) after the plane landed at Manchester Airport yesterday.
Police thoroughly searched the plane and the luggage of all 269 passengers on board the plane and “nothing suspicious was found” said GMP chief superintendent John O’Hare.
A spokesman for GMP said that the suspect has now been sectioned, commenting:
“Following his arrest he was assessed by medical staff and again by a mental health team.“He was subsequently sectioned to allow for a fuller assessment and appropriate treatment.”
