London Stansted Airport is planning on opening its first premium lounge this year as its seeks to establish the gateway as a base for long-haul airlines.
Owner Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is said to be spending $1.7 million on the Escape Lounge in its main departure area, which will be free to some customers and available on a pay-on-the-door policy.
London Stansted managing director, Andrew Harrison, told Bloomberg, the lounge is said to be part of strategy to expand traffic by luring heavyweight carriers such as Emirates and others.
An Escape Lounge at Manchester Airport costs around $25 and offers complimentary pastries, sandwiches and drinks, and more substantial meals for an extra fee and other facilities.
A raft of projects are being carried out at London Stansted, to upgrade the 23-year-old terminal building, which are all aimed at attracting new clients.
Enhancements include improved security checks, while retail improvements are set for completion in the second-half of 2015.
Last year passenger traffic at London Stansted rose 2.2% to 17.8 million, but this is only around half the 35 million it has capacity for.
